The only way for GA4 to capture AI leads is if the user directly clicks from the language model used in the AI software. While GA4's limitations are real, they're not a reason to give up on using it. A comprehensive approach to AI traffic visibility involves layering several tools and techniques, which we have outlined below:
Build a custom AI channel group in GA4
GA4 allows you to create custom channel definitions using regex pattern matching. By building a rule that catches, say, traffic from chatgpt.com, you can at least separate the sessions that do pass a referrer header and let you know the AI tools that are yielding the most results. This won't solve the copy-paste but it’s a step in the right direction to uncover the impact AI has on your business.
Use Google Search Console's AI Mode filter
Since mid-2025, Google Search Console has included an "AI Mode" filter in the Performance report. This is currently the only (free) way to see whether Google's AI systems are surfacing your content in responses. It won't tell you about ChatGPT or Perplexity, but it provides a meaningful signal about your Google AI visibility. Many law firms are ignoring this data.
Monitor your server logs for AI crawlers
Because GA4 can't reliably see bot activity, the only way to understand how often AI systems are reading your content is through server-side log analysis. Some tools can parse your server logs and identify traffic from known AI crawlers by their user agent strings. This won't tell you what the AI said about your firm, but it will tell you which pages are being read. This data, coupled with a straightforward keyword analysis, is a great starting point for content optimization.
Track branded search volume independently
If AI systems are recommending your firm by name, you should see a corresponding lift in branded search queries in Google Search Console. Monitoring branded query volume can serve as a proxy signal for growing AI visibility, even when direct attribution is impossible. (This is a relatively straightforward tracking process that your digital marketing team should be doing already.)
While solutions exist to better track and monitor incoming AI traffic, it has never been more important to have a digital marketing team that knows how to maximize your AI reach.
